49th Annual Shrimp Festival Pirate Parade

Sponsored by Residence Inn, Amelia Island.

The 2012 Pirate Parade was a HUGE success! The most entries ever and the biggest crowd of spectators ever. Our parade coordinator arranged for fair weather with a wonderful breeze that made a great event even better.

The pirates are coming! The sky will be ablaze!

Pirates invaded the town of Fernandina Beach on Friday, May 4 at the foot of Centre Street at the Amelia River. Following the thwarted invasion, fireworks lit up the sky over the marina.

Undaunted, the tenacious pirate gang returned to invade again on Saturday at the same location! The invasion was repelled and peace reigns again on our beautiful island — at least until the first weekend of May, 2013!

So, what's all the hoopla about pirates on this island and in our festival?? Well, in Amelia Island's history, one of the eight flags that flew over this fair island was the flag of pirate Luis Aury in 1817. Fernandina Beach was inhabited by pirates, and the townsfolk distanced themselves from the rowdy interlopers and kept a low profile for their own safety. Unlike their predecesors, our modern pirates may look a little scary, but are not at all dangerous. As part of our Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival we have two pirate invasions (always successfully overthrown). The truth is, when our local pirates invade, good things happen for the community. Learn more at FernandinaPirates.com.
